1.
Who did Moffitt replace? Cotter.
|
This
could well be a picture of poor Cotter (Suncompass doesn't think
this picture is of Tully standing beside Hitch, but with the goggles
and helmet on, it is hard to be entirely sure. No matchstick in his
mouth though.).
The
episode credits Cotter as being portrayed by Whitey Christy.
According to IMDB,
Whitey Christy appeared in a couple of Roy Rogers western movies
from the late 1940s. Suncompass hopes he didn't get shot off his
horse as quickly as he got shot off the Rat Patrol jeep in the pilot episode. |

2.
Who was the Rat Patrol's C.O.? In the pilot? In the
series? Colonel
Quint in the pilot and Captain Boggs
for the rest of the series.
|
Suncompass
is sure there is a good reason why they needed a Colonel to keep
them in line in the pilot episode but only needed a Captain later on
(Was Cotter a particularly difficult to control soldier perhaps?). |

3.
What was the title
of the pilot
episode? The Chase of Fire Raid.
|
All
the episodes were 'this Raid' or 'that Raid'. Director John
Peyser didn't know who picked out the names but according to 'The TV
Collector' (no. 94, August 1998, Jon Etter) it was Tom Gries who
started the 'Raid' practice with the pilot episode. The episode names
didn't always remain the same from production to air either.

What does Hitch use to camouflage a bomb in the Wildest Raid of
All? In a water bottle/canteen.

5.
What battalion
do the Rats belong to as given on the Rat Patrol collector
cards? 111th Armor Reconn. B.N.
|
That
was according to the collector cards, but by the time the Last
Chance Raid happened they seemed to have joined another unit. |

6.
What unit do the Rats belong to in the series? Long
Range Desert Patrol attached to Head Quarters, 2nd Corps.
|
This
bit of information came from the Last Chance Raid when Troy
used the German radio station to warn a British unit that they were
heading into a trap set by the Germans. |

7.
Complete this Moffitt quotation - "Meteorology, sand conditions..."
"...odds and ends."
|
Let's
see. What odds and ends did Moffitt actually use in that first
episode in order to help the Rat Patrol destroy the buried ammo/fuel dump?
He
used navigation, map reading, firing at the enemy from a moving
vehicle without falling out, tea brewing, site identification, sand
pattern classification and interpretation, on site evaluation of
residues in sand, and how to lay out a wire for detonating a
charge....and last, but most definitely not least, he knew how to
take direction from Troy.
He
got a permanent job with the Rat Patrol (mind you, he was 'hired' before
he got smitten with Troy's girlfriend. Perhaps Troy would not have
been so keen to 'hire' Moffitt after that.). |

8.
Complete this Troy quotation - "If you have to moan..."
"...do it in German."
|
 |
In
the Life against Death Raid Hitch had been injured and urgently
needed surgery, but the nearest hospital was a German one. The
patrol agreed that they would all take Hitch into the German hospital
for surgery and then they'd all take him out.
Troy
reminded Hitch, as they prepared to take him into the German camp,
"If you have to moan, do it in German." |

12.
What is Hitch's stated expertise?
Ordnance
|
In
the Kingdom Come Raid, Hitch was detached from the Rat Patrol
because his knowledge of ordnance was needed elsewhere (to transport
some special pressure sensitive shells). Does this mean that
Corporal Meekin had ordnance
expertise too? Suncompass is just wondering if Meekin had any
redeeming qualities whatsoever. |

13.
What is Troy's favourite drink?
Icy cold glass of beer with a dash of salt
|
 |
From
the Gun Runner Raid we learn that Troy likes icy cold beer
with a dash of salt. The hospitable Ned - the Gun Runner -
offered Troy and Moffitt each drinks. How often do you suppose
Troy could find an icy cold glass of beer with or without a dash of
salt in the desert land during the war? Suncompass also wonders
how Ned knew what they liked to drink, if he knew at all and wasn't
just guessing at their preferences. |

14.
How many total kills did Tully get during the series? 72
|
Tully
didn't get a lot of chances to fire the highly effective 50 on the
back of the Rat Patrol jeeps. He did, however, have a chance in
the Trial by Fire Raid where he put it to effective use (27
kills) in helping to create a diversion at the train station .
Suncompass
hasn't done, and doesn't plan to do, a count of confirmed kills by
any of the characters and left that to huge task entirely to the
author of this quiz. |

15.
What did Tully chase as a child when he got loose from his mammy's
apron strings? A butterfly
|
While
the patrol waited for a missing Troy at the rendezvous spot in the Blind
Man's Bluff Raid, Tully told a story from his childhood about
how he wandered away from safety when he chased a butterfly. He
got lost and found the world to be a big and scary place.
Probably not half as scary as the place he was in when he told that
story to his companions - in the middle of the desert war. |

16.
What was the first name of Troy's nurse in Blind Man's Bluff Raid?

and she was played by Salome Jens. |

Complete this Moffitt quotation - "The desert is like a
lady..." "
...she puts on a new face every day."

drive home the importance of having an expert help the patrol find
the buried dump. To see more about how the desert can put on a
new face, go here. |

20.
Complete this Tully quotation - "I can fix his mouth a lot
sooner..." "...than I can fix
this jeep."
|
Tully
was feeling more than a little irritated - as were all the patrol
members - with Archie Gribs in the Fatal Chase Raid.
Tully was, just this once, a little more vocal about it than the
others. Suncompass thinks that everyone in the vicinity would
have been privately happy to have anyone take a monkey wrench to Gribs. |

How many kills did Troy get in the series? 146

confirmed kills up to Barbo (author of this quiz). |
Use

24.
What motor company made the jeeps the Patrol used?
|
 |
The
initial contract for the jeeps supplied during the war was given to
Willys but, perhaps because Willys was a small company, a second
contract was given to Ford. During the war "Ford
manufactured 277,896 GPWs while Willys made 361,349 Mbs." [http://www.off-road.com/~early/l_head.html#MB]
It
might be impossible to tell which company made the Rat Patrol's jeep
we saw on the show, but clearly Suncompass should look into it, and
when she does she'll add that information to the website.
Help
from jeep experts is welcome.

26.
How many kills did Hitch get in the series? 77
|
 |
How
did Hitch manage to get so many more kills than Tully?
Hitch
got to fire the 50 more often than Tully (like in Chase of Fire Raid)
and he often went with Troy and therefore got more chances to shoot
(like in Kill at Koorlea Raid) while Tully guarded the jeeps
so they could safely withdraw when the time came. |

Who was Moffitt's and Tully's contact in The Deadly Double Raid?
Craig
|

The
hospital tent and compound from The
Deadly
Double Raid |
In
the POW camp, Moffitt and Tully were told that they could find Craig
if they went 20 feet out of the hospital tent, 50 feet to the left,
and then 6 feet straight down. Clearly Craig wasn't going to
tell them many secrets.

33.
How many kills did Dietrich get in the series? 2
confirmed
|
 |
If
the picture to the left is Dietrich, then he had some proficiency
with knife throwing and one of his confirmed kills was removing the
MP guarding the mute boy at the beginning of The Hide and Go Seek Raid.
Another
confirmed kill for Dietrich is when he dispatches the spy
transmitting a secret message to the Allies in The Kill at Koorlea
Raid (picture to right). |
 |
|
One
of Dietrich's probable kills was not one of the Allies, but one of
his own side. Dietrich surely was responsible for the removal
of Captain Wansee of the SS (in The
Decoy Raid) and in so doing he did the Rat Patrol, and in
particular Moffitt, a substantial favour. Considering Wansee's
despicable character, however, perhaps Dietrich's action ultimately
helped the Germans too. |

What's a ghibli (Khibli, Gibli) and what's in it? It

was a mixed drink that Ned, in the Gun Runner Raid, handed to
Moffitt as supposedly the Englishman's favourite drink.

In
the Moment of Truce Raid Dietrich said this to Hassan, the
representative sent by the German propaganda ministry to make a deal
with the Arab chieftan. Hassan wanted to use the Rat Patrol as
bargaining chips but Dietrich wasn't keen on the idea and said,

an German underground ammo dump in the Two Against Time Raid .
