A snippet from the story Postcards from the Ledge . . . The last of the four had arrived. The watcher knew them all. For more than a week he'd observed them gather in the room daily. It was as if they were still held together by invisible strings that had been spun strong through the war years. "My apologies, Tully," said Moffitt. "I had no idea you were out in the hall. There's a pot of tea in the kitchen. Help yourself." Tully muttered something indecipherable and collapsed into an easy chair by the door, put his head back and closed his eyes. "What are you doing here?" asked Troy, tapping ash out through the gap in the window. "You didn't get to bed until dawn." Tully didn't open his eyes but jerked a thumb at Hitch. "Ask him." Hitch completely ignored his comrade and set to his appointed task of opening the envelope. "I'm surprised there is still mail out there for us," said Moffitt. "The army may be slow about some things, but the Royal Mail is generally spot on." He nodded at the brown envelope in the process of being ripped open. "By the looks of it, I'd say that envelope has been touring the world for a good long time." "Maybe it got dropped into occupied France by mistake," said Troy. The envelope released its contents onto Hitch's lap in a flutter of a dozen bright rectangles. The watcher smiled. . . |
